Brazil - Canada Business Opportunities

Brazil-Canada Trade Opportunities '94

"In which areas are there good opportunities between Brazil and Canada?" Frances Lankin, former Minister of Economic Development and Trade for Ontario -  Toronto, Canada - May 26,1994

The objective of this study is to offer ideas and suggestions as possible answers to this important question. Obviously, this is a very broad issue involving political, economic and social factors.

We do not pretend, with this study, to analyze all the factors involved in this issue, nor just relate statistical data or present an academic thesis.

Rather, the purpose of this study is to offer an account of the experiences of numerous professionals, who are faced with the daily challenge of pursuing and establishing business relationships between Canada and Brazil.

Brazilian Market Overview not only offers general information about demographics, politics and economics, but also discloses existing and potential trade opportunities between Brazil and Canada. Two basic criteria were used to select information: reliable sources and most up to date facts.

In the chapter titled Sector Activities and Analysis, every effort was made to follow the same format and classification used by the International Trade Business Plan 1993/1994, Government of Canada. This session complements the previous chapter, and focuses on trade opportunities by economic activity.

Still with the experiences of entrepreneurs in the import/export field, the article "Canada: Let's Trade?!", by Mr. Pires, is of particular interest. This important account (or adventure) illustrates the difficulties and peculiar resistances found when trying to pursue business in the Canadian market.

In his article "Modern Brazil: An Entrepreneurial Vision", Mr. Altenfelder makes a recent and objective analysis of the Brazilian Economy, considering the political and social climate that has developed in Brazil over the last five years. Well acquainted with diverse economic interests throughout Brazil, Mr. Altenfelder is responsible for one of the most highly regarded institutes of economic and social studies of the state of Sao Paulo, and Brazil. His optimism and enthusiasm are contagious when the topic of discussion revolves around the many possibilities and enormous potential of Brazil within the context of International Trade.
